Wolves legend Steve Bull will have an operation on the knee he injured before his testimonial game against Villa last month.

Bull saw a specialist this week, who advised he will have to undergo keyhole surgery. He will go under the knife on Tuesday and faces the prospect of more agonising rehab.

It is an injury to his right knee, which had not previously given him any problems.

Bull said: "It could have gone at any time, the doctors told me. It's just one of those things.

"The operation will be to tidy up my cartilage and flush out some foreign bodies and bits of bone.

"It isn't a major operation. I'm just relieved that there is something they can do - I have been in agony since it happened.

"When I recover it'll be straight back on the bike and running in straight lines, but the boots have been put away for good!"

Bull wanted to play at least half an hour in his testimonial match, but injured his knee just before the game.

In the event he was taken off after seven minutes - missing an early chance to mark the occasion with a goal - as Villa ran out 3-0 winners.

"I was just gutted that people might have come out to see me play and I could only play for a few minutes," he said.

"The knee just locked, I couldn't move it.

"I think people wanted to know why I didn't play a bit longer, but it was because I was injured. I suppose having to go for this operation shows how serious the injury was.

"As for that chance - I sat in bed the night after the game and I could picture it again. I should have just headed it in rather than trying to chest and volley it, but the knee was giving me so much pain I felt I couldn't land on it without hurting myself."
