ENORMOUS PRIDE AS STAND IS OFFICIALLY OPENED 29th August 2003 : email Steve Bull
The last two weeks may not have seen Wolves get off to the blistering start to the Premiership we were all hoping for but it has provided me with a real personal highlight.
The official opening of the Steve Bull Stand took place before last Saturday's nightmare against Charlton and it will be an afternoon I will remember for many years to come.
I felt an enormous amount of pride and satisfaction when I was walking out on the pitch with my girlfriend, Kirsty, and it was a special occasion for both of us. When Sir Jack Hayward first spoke to me about the idea earlier in the summer, I was more than a bit surprised. He felt my services at Wolves over 14 years had deserved it and I have to admit I was a little taken aback.
Scoring goals for Wolves was my job and something I loved doing and I never thought I would be in the privileged position to have a stand named after me at Molineux.
I am a little bit worried because people usually only ever receive awards like this when they are dead, so I just hope that don't know something that I don't!
But in all seriousness, I am mightily honoured and I hope Wolves supporters sitting in the stand will have plenty to cheer about over many years, starting with tomorrow.
After a very encouraging performance at Old Trafford on Wednesday, it is vital that we get three points against Portsmouth tomorrow. The last thing we want to be doing is going into a two week break still looking for our first Premiership point.
Going back to our hotel in Manchester after Wednesday's game, we were saying that the performance against United gave us a real platform to build on, and I think we have a chance to do exactly that tomorrow.
Portsmouth have got off to a flying start and have obviously been inspired by Teddy Sherringham but I don't expect them to stay in their position at the top of the table for too long.
They are one of the teams who I thought we would be in the relegation mini-league at the start of the season and I still think they may struggle. If we can reproduce the performance we gave against United tomorrow, I think we have an excellent chance of getting the three points and that would
make a huge difference.
Looking at the Premiership table, one win would take us right up the table to seventh or eighth from bottom and that would have a big psychological effect on the players.
I am sure Dave Jones will try and get in some new faces before Sunday's deadline and I see he has been linked with Emerson and former Villa midfielder Joey Gudjonsen this week.
If we can get those two and perhaps one or two others in before Sunday, we will be given ourselves a real chance of finishing above the relegation zone which is, after all, the aim of the season.
